Hi Francesca! I am in a similar boat and I just found a job opening at a small private school nearby. This is so helpful! I’m just worried they want someone with SEO skills which I don’t have and I’m worried about the writing part.

From what I have seen so far from our web team, its less about google rankings for school websites, and more about making sure that all posts are ADA compliant - so not posting graphics with text that can't be read by a screenreader, that kind of thing. I'm sure there are tutorials out there for that.

Yes! Do a search on your BOCES site for communications or public relations - you'll find the team they offer to local districts.

Francesca! How fun to have discovered you again. I seriously have no idea how this article crossed my path but when I saw your name I knew it sounded so familiar. We were in Courtney's Filmmaking together a few years ago.

Anyhow, this feels very serendipitous because I too have been thinking about returning to the employed world in a very similar kinda role. Be it for schools, nonprofits or really any company that needs this type of work, which is basically every company I feel! The key is finding out how to find those positions.

I took your tips and dug a little. I'm in the SF Bay Area. I couldn't find anything directly for our school districts of Acalanes or Walnut Creek, but I did find this for Contra Costa County: https://www.cccoe.k12.ca.us/Departments--Schools/Departments/Communications/index.html

So dies this mean they do the PR in-house? Would you suggest I contact one this office and ask?

Thanks for sharing your experience!

Yes, it looks like it! I would inquire. California also has a school public relations association - https://www.calspra.org - maybe dig around their site a bit and see if you can find any resources?

Thanks Francesca! Sorry for my delayed response - I dont jump on substack often..... but that may change. I'm loving what I find! So much more interesting than IG, but then again I get sucked into reading and then I loose time. Always my dilemma, lol!
